Your resume is what gets you that interview. It is the ultimate 'first impression' you can give an employer, so getting it right counts! Here are a few of QUT Civil Engineers in Demand's tips on how to do it right:

1. Formatting and Layout

There isn't a right and wrong way to set out a Resume. Just as long as you are consistent with your formatting, and it looks professional. Recommended sections to add are:

Contact Details

Qualifications

Work History

Referees

Additional Information

Be sure to list any awards or commendations you have received in your relevant field. Most resumes should only be 2-5 pages long; you don't want to bore recruiters with useless information.

2. List Referees

Like it or not, employers will check references. Make sure you list them, but more importantly make sure they are aware of it and will give a positive reference. Nothing annoys potential referees more than an unexpected phonecall.

3. Don't lie

Don't list skills or qualifications you don't have. This can bite you if you get that job.

4. Gimmicks don't work

Don't send your resume in a box of glitter, or on a postcard, or use any other gimmick. Nothing turns off recruiting staff quicker. Just present a neat, professional image and recruiting staff will appreciate it.

5. Research the position, and outline how you are suitable for it

Nothing makes a candidate easier to employ than when they talk to their employers in terms of what they want. Include on the cover your knowledge of the position, and how you are most equipped to handle it.
